The GIA has a system of grading colour just like clarity and cut.

H – J graded diamonds are the most common colours one finds in the market and usually have a slight yellow tint.
G – F graded diamonds are considered near colourless and are considered of high quality.
D – E graded diamonds are classified colourless and are very rare. Being the rarest they are also accepted as the most beautiful of diamonds.

Understanding how fluorescence affects a diamond

Some diamonds possess a quality called fluorescence. In different lighting conditions, fluorescence can make a diamond look whiter or more yellow. Gem quality diamonds usually have a blue fluorescence but can also fluoresce in white, yellow or orange.
Fluorescence cannot normally be detected with the naked eye and usually does not affect a diamonds appearance in normal lighting conditions. However a white diamond with a strong blue fluorescence can look somewhat milky or hazy in direct sunlight. On the other hand a diamond with low colour gradings around the I-K colour will look whiter than it is if the stone has strong fluorescence as it masks the real colour of the stone.
